Nobody likes to imagine the worst-case scenario, especially when it comes to our most prized possessions – like our boats! The reality is that boats are high-ticket items, and as such, they are vulnerable to theft. If you wish to avoid the heartbreak of a stolen boat, you should take steps to deter criminals, like storing your boat in a safe location and removing any valuables on board. Secure Storage

Whether you store your boat on dry land or in the water, choose the safest location possible. Leaving your boat in the driveway might be convenient, but that convenience can also benefit potential thieves. Instead, consider a locked garage or storage shed, a backyard with a locked gate, or a secured marina.

Remove Valuables

It’s definitely worth taking the time to remove any valuables from your boat after each voyage. That includes expensive fishing or watersports gear, and boating accessories like handheld VHF radios and GPS units. Anything left on board the vessel will attract the attention of potential thieves and make your boat a more tempting target.

Disable Power

When you are away from the vessel, make sure to remove any ignition keys and kill-switch lanyards and turn off the main fuel valve. Install a locking compartment over the battery switch to prevent thieves from tampering with it. You can also disable the engine altogether by installing a toggle switch behind the dashboard, in one of the kill-switch wires. This will break the circuit and prevent the engine from starting even with the kill-switch lanyard in place.

Cover It Up

A canvas boat cover may not prevent theft, but it can serve as a deterrent. Only the most dedicated thieves will bother with removing a boat cover, as this action takes time and may draw suspicion. Of course, a boat cover also protects your boat from the elements, so you are better off having one whether or not you are concerned about theft.
